How to Measure Your Ring Size
Eyeing up some new gold vermeil rings to add to your collection? In that case, here are three ways that you can measure your ring size.
Refer to a Ring Size Guide
The easiest way to measure your ring size is to use a tool that was created with the sole purpose of getting the job done right.
You can pop into your local jewellery shop and do this in person. Meanwhile, some shops will have a free ring sizer on their website that you can download.
This is the most accurate way to measure your ring size. But, there are some more tips and tricks to follow to ensure you do it right. Plus – what do you do if you need to find out someone’s ring size without them knowing? Read on…
Create a DIY Ring Sizer
If you are unable to get hold of a free ring sizer, you can still measure your ring size without going to a jeweller. You just need to get a little creative!
This is one of the easiest ways to measure your ring size at home.
- Take either a piece of string or a strip of paper and wrap it around the finger you’re planning to buy a ring for.
- Mark the spot where the string or paper meets – do consider that this will allow the ring to fit over your knuckle!
- Measure the length in millimetres or fractions of inches.
- Refer to a printable ring size guide to determine what your size is.
3. Use an Existing Ring
Your other option is to take a ring that you currently own which fits perfectly. You can then refer to our DIY ring size advice above to determine its size. Alternatively, you can take this ring to your local jeweller and ask them to do this for you.
This is the best way to measure the ring size of someone who you wish to present with a surprise ring! You’ll just have to figure out yourself how to sneak away one of their existing rings.
What is the Average Ring Size for a Woman?
Ring sizes are reported differently across the various continents. So you may need to refer to a conversion chart to find the correct size as per the country.
As a guideline, the most common ring size for a woman in the UK is L. In the US, this is size 6.
Tips on How to Use a Ring Size Guide
Now that you know how to measure your ring size, let’s run over some helpful tips about collecting the measurements.
When to Measure your Ring Size
Have you ever felt like your favourite gold vermeil rings feel a tad tighter in the evening or under the midday sun? That’s because on a typical day your fingers will vary in size. As your environment changes, your hands can swell. Hormone fluctuations can also impact your finger size throughout the day and even month.
For that reason, we recommend measuring your ring size at different times throughout the day or over a few weeks.
How Should a Ring Fit?
You should be able to glide your new ring over your knuckles comfortably without tugging. Once it’s in place, give your hand a shake and check that the ring stays in position. The ring shouldn’t swivel on its own, nor should it slide towards your knuckles.
Experiment with a few different widths and styles and compare how they feel. A statement green onyx ring will feel different from a set of stacking rings.
Does the Ring Width Impact the Size?
As a rule of thumb, when you buy a wider band – you should consider choosing the ring size a tier higher. This ensures a more comfortable fit.
